Future From Waste Lab Residency
3rd Aug 2022 to 10th Sep 2022
Founded by industrial designer Luke Phillips, sustainable brand Into Carry is challenging the way we think about waste. In line with BETA and STH BNK’s commitment to circularity, Into Carry repurposes existing materials into brand new bags built for modern life.
REINVENTING WASTE
This Melbourne-based accessories label upcycles materials that would otherwise go to landfill: velvet curtains from a local cinema, vintage leather couches, milk cartons and even instant noodle packets. Through using discarded matter, Into Carry encourages us to contemplate consumerism, sustainability and the mundane objects that make up our worlds.
“Our north star is to challenge the value we place on certain materials. Luxury is often determined by scarcity, but by crafting premium products from everyday waste we champion it as the high-quality resource it is.”

THOUGHT-PROVOKING FASHION
An extension of their line of bags, Into Carry will create a series of limited edition garments during their Future From Waste Lab residency. The two clothing styles – a unisex jacket and vest – will be cut from scrapped workwear sourced from textile recyclers Upparel and SUK Workwear. Riffing on utility and functionality, the garments will pay homage to the performance aspect of traditional workwear design. Simultaneously, the use of pre-owned fabric causes us to question our relationship with recovered resources. “Each piece tells its own story, with the label detailing the material’s story. Our hope is these pieces are worn on the street, provoking conversations and awareness for a sustainable future,” says Luke Phillips.

ABOUT INTO CARRY
Along with upcycling waste, Into Carry considers the lifecycle of their products. Designed with longevity and repairability in mind, the items are an exercise in form and function. The modular bags can be attached to one another, offering a new level of customisation. Visit the brand’s cafe, Into Coffee, at their Collingwood studio for zero-waste flat whites and sustainable sandwiches.
