Ephemeral Pavilion

Home to six shortlisted STHBNK by Beulah Designs.

Southbank’s waterfront is currently home to the Beulah Pavilion, a pop-up purpose built sculpture to showcase the six shortlisted designs for the Southbank by Beulah architecture competition.

With the project set to transform the Melbourne skyline and surrounding precinct, the winning design will be part of the $2 billion transformation of the former BMW site.

Located in front of the famous red steps, the pavilion has been designed to be an ephemeral structure to hold specific events as part of the competition including a unique space for six of the world’s best architecture firms – MAD Architects, MVRDV, OMA, UNStudio, Bjarke Ingels Group and Coop Himmelb(l)au – to present their final design concepts.

The architect behind the design of the pavilion, Samson Tiew from ODO (One Design Office), created the sculpture to represent the city being in a state of constant motion and change.

It uses concentric frames which are whirled around on common axis, with programmed lights emphasising movement.

The pop-up Beulah Pavilion will be visible to the public until 10 August, with each of the six shortlisted designs available for public viewing following the Future Cities symposium.
